Welcome to Beyond the Logos! I realize it’s been quite some time since my last post, and I appreciate your patience during this hiatus. Life has been a whirlwind of change and growth, and I’m excited to share some significant updates with you.
A New Chapter: Graduate Studies at Candler School of Theology
Over the past year, I’ve embarked on an enriching academic journey, pursuing a Master of Theological Studies (MTS) at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. It is quite refreshing to learn from a university more theologically liberal than my undergraduate alma mater, Liberty University. As I will discuss below, my focus in my research at Candler is on the problem of suffering in my favorite biblical book, Ecclesiastes.
The decision to return to academia wasn’t made lightly. My passion for understanding the complexities of faith, scripture, and human existence has always been at the forefront of my pursuits. Candler’s esteemed faculty and diverse community have provided an ideal environment to explore these interests further.
Introducing Beyond the Logos
You may have noticed a change in the blog’s title. Formerly known as Living by the Logos, it is now Beyond the Logos. This transformation reflects both my personal growth and the evolving focus of this platform. While I loved the name Living by the Logos, it carried too many evangelical connotations, and, given that I am skeptical and agnostic, I do not wish to mislead readers.
The term “Logos” holds profound significance. In philosophical contexts, it represents the rational principle governing the universe. Theologically, particularly in Christian tradition, “Logos” refers to the Word of God, incarnate in Jesus Christ. By choosing “Beyond the Logos,” I aim to signal a journey that transcends conventional interpretations, seeking deeper understanding and connection beyond established doctrines.
This new title encapsulates my commitment to exploring the spaces where faith meets doubt, where tradition intersects with innovation, and where ancient texts reveal contemporary insights. It’s an invitation to move past surface-level interpretations and venture into the profound depths of theological reflection.
A Deep Dive into Ecclesiastes
One of the pivotal aspects of my MTS program has been the opportunity to immerse myself in the study of Ecclesiastes. This enigmatic book of the Hebrew Bible has captivated scholars and seekers alike with its candid exploration of life’s meaning, the ephemeral nature of worldly pursuits, and the quest for lasting fulfillment.
Particularly pertinent to my endeavors, I am studying the problem of innocent suffering in Ecclesiastes 3-5. These passages provide a raw, unbiased depiction of a God distant from human suffering. I look forward to writing about updates on my studies here, whenever time allows.
My fascination with Ecclesiastes stems from its raw honesty and philosophical depth. Unlike other biblical texts that offer clear directives or narratives, Ecclesiastes presents a contemplative monologue wrestling with existential questions that remain strikingly relevant today. Its refrain, “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity,” resonates as a poignant reminder of the transient nature of human endeavors.
In my research, I’ve been particularly drawn to the themes of temporality and wisdom. Ecclesiastes challenges readers to confront the brevity of life and encourages a pursuit of wisdom that acknowledges life’s uncertainties. This perspective has profound implications for how we navigate our personal journeys, make ethical decisions, and find meaning amidst the fleeting moments of our existence.
Looking Ahead
As I continue this academic and personal exploration, “Beyond the Logos” will serve as a space to share insights, reflections, and engage in meaningful dialogue. While I won’t delve into the specifics of my research methodology or sources here, I aim to present thought-provoking content that invites you to ponder alongside me. Of course, given that I am a full-time grad student and full-time employee, my posts will continue to be sparse for the foreseeable future.
I believe that theology isn’t confined to ivory towers or ancient texts; it’s a living, breathing conversation that impacts our daily lives. Through this blog, I hope to bridge the gap between scholarly study and practical application, making complex ideas accessible and relevant.
An Invitation to Engage
Your thoughts, questions, and perspectives are invaluable to this journey. I encourage you to engage with the content, share your insights, and participate in the discussions that unfold. Whether you’re a fellow seeker, a skeptic, or someone simply curious about these topics, there’s a place for you here.
Thank you for your continued support and for accompanying me on this path of discovery. Together, let’s venture beyond the logos, beyond the words, into the heart of meaning and truth.
Sincerely,
Luke.
